Auditions for Arts!Oglethorpe’s summer musical “The Sound of Music” have been set for Monday May 13th at the historic Crawford School from 5:00-8:00 PM.  The show dates are July 12-14 & 18-21 with rehearsals beginning June 3rd Monday through Thursday evenings.

Auditions are open to anyone who has completed kindergarten through adults of any age.

The show features wonderful vocals for the Nun’s Chorus. Adult (and older teens) who enjoy choral music will particularly enjoy these roles. Nun’s rehearsals will be scheduled for one hour twice a week until the final week. There is some scheduling flexibility.  The Mother Abbess, Sister Berthe and Sister Margaretta are also speaking roles and will be required at additional rehearsals.  These roles have additional music numbers and dialog.

The Ensemble (with some smaller speaking roles) includes party guests, military officers and festival contestants. These roles have a limited rehearsal schedule.

There are seven VonTrapp children (5 girls playing ages 5, 7, 9, 13 and 16  and 2 boys playing ages 11 and 14).  Children interested in auditioning need to come prepared to sing “Do-Re-Mi” (we provide the piano accompaniment) and to do a short reading from the show from memory. Both the song and “reading” are available on the Arts!O website.  Children’s rehearsals will be scheduled and they will not be required to be at every rehearsal.  However, they will need to be available for all children’s rehearsals. The schedule will be drawn up once casting is complete.  If your child has conflicts and would still like to audition, please bring your complete calendar to auditions.

Liesl will be required to attend additional rehearsals. Rolph (able to play 17) shares the stage with Liesel for “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and has some flexibility on scheduling.

There are non-singing roles for adults including Franz the Butler and Frau Schmidt the Housekeeper.  In the Broadway version, both Uncle Max and Baroness von Schraeder have vocal numbers.  These are great smaller singing roles with some dialog.  The Captain has more musical numbers in the Broadway version (including songs with Max and the Baroness).

The role of Maria is, of course, the most demanding.  Maria will need to be available for all rehearsals.

Anyone who cannot make the scheduled auditions must arrange for an alternate time before May 13th.  Please call 706-354-1339 to make arrangements.

No previous experience is required to audition and there is not cost to participate. Everyone will be asked to come to at least one set-call (weekend work session).  Rehearsals are held in the evenings from 6:00-9:00 as scheduled.  Please come to auditions with all possible scheduling conflicts.  Cast members must be available for all rehearsals during the weeks of July 8th and 15th and all performances.  Sunday performances are 3:00 matinees.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved both onstage and behind the scenes with sets, costumes and publicity. If you’ve been wanting to get involved with  Arts!O, now is the time and this is the show!  Check the Arts!O website www.artsoglethorpe.org for the latest information and to download the audition forms.  Questions?  Ready to volunteer?  Call Director Bly Hartley 706-354-1339.
