CAST LIST

Below is our cast list for Hairspray. We had lots of talented folks audition. Unfortunately not everyone was able to be cast. We had a mid-day meltdown on our male ensemble today and are in the process of regrouping to ensure a balanced cast. If you are a girl and did not get the role you wanted but would now consider joining the Ensemble, please let us know. We have room for several more girls for both the teen ensemble and for the North Avenue Ensemble. We are looking for 2+ more guys to round out the male ensemble.

PLEASE EMAIL BLY TO CONFIRM ACCEPTING YOUR ROLE AND TO ARRANGE TO PICK UP YOUR SCRIPT AND GET MEASURED FOR YOUR COSTUME(S). bly@artsoglethorpe.org

Rehearsal schedules are in the works. You should receive an emailed rehearsal schedule by Wednesday. If you have any changes in your conflicts, please let me know!

ROLES

TRACY TURNBLAD: Our story’s unsuspecting teenage protagonist, she is large and in charge. Confident, talented, and incredibly determined. A true triple threat powerhouse, with strong comedic timing. Stage Age: 16-18.

CORNY COLLINS: The charismatic host of the ‘Corny Collins Show’. Good looking and smooth talking, he is a genuinely nice guy on and off camera. Stage Age: 25+.

EDNA TURNBLAD: Tracy’s big and blonde-ish mother. She is a working housewife who has lost her confidence and dream to be a plus-size clothing designer. Boisterous and commanding. Played by a male in drag. Stage Age: 40's.

PENNY PINGLETON: Tracy’s best friend and dorky sidekick. Not the brightest girl, but she has good intentions. Bursting to get free of her mother’s dominating control, she falls for Seaweed. Stage Age: 16-18.

AMBER VON TUSSLE: Link’s girlfriend and Tracy’s nemesis. She is pretty, thin, shallow, snobby, and racist. Always feels the need to be the center of attention. Stage Age: 16-18.

VELMA VON TUSSLE: Amber’s mother and the director of the ‘Corny Collins Show’. She is a devious task master and snobby racist. Will go to any length to ensure her daughter is the next big thing. Stage Age: 40s.

LINK LARKIN: The star heartthrob on the ‘Corny Collins Show’. Hoping to get his big break with a recording contract, he unexpectedly falls for Tracy. Stage Age: 16-18.

SEAWEED J. STUBBS: Tracy’s classmate and friend, who is discriminated due to his skin color. He is cocky, but surprisingly lovable. Talented in song and dance. He falls for Penny. Stage Age: 16-18.

LITTLE INEZ: Seaweed’s younger sister. Short in stature, but big on talent, she struggles to understand the discrimination she faces. Stage Age: 12-15.

MOTORMOUTH MAYBELLE: Seaweed and Little Inez’s mother, she also appears as a Guest DJ on the ‘Corny Collins Show’ once a month, on ‘Negro Day’. Big, blonde, beautiful, and proud of it. She is brassy and confident. Stage Age: 40-50.

WILBUR TURNBLAD: Tracy’s simpleminded and kind father. He owns a joke shop and supports his daughter in spite of everything else. He also loves his wife, Edna, very much. Stage Age: 40-50.

FEMALE AUTHORITY FIGURE: Comedic Character woman. Plays the featured character roles of Penny’s mother Prudy Pingleton, The Gym Teacher, The Prison Matron, among others. Age: 30-50. (May split role) (Prudy sings in "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now")

MALE AUTHORITY FIGURE: Comedic Character man. Plays the featured character roles of Mr. Pinky, The Principal, Prison Guard, Mr. Spritzer, among others. Age: 30-50. (May split role)

COUNCIL ENSEMBLE: 8-10 male & female dancers/singers to fill the members of the ‘Corny Collins Show’. Stage Age: 16-18. (Group singing only - some dialog)

NORTH AVENUE ENSEMBLE: 4-10 male & female African-American singers, dancers, and actors to fill out the North Avenue Ensemble. Stage Age: 15-18. (Group singing - some dialog)

THE DYNAMITES: African American trio a la The Supremes. Any age. Ideally a group of 3 women who love to sing together and would have fun with a low stress, cameo role. "Welcome to the 60's".

TEEN/ADULT ENSEMBLE - There are a limited number of roles for adults and teens. Ensemble will be used for vocal backup on many numbers and may be on stage for "Good Morning Baltimore", "Welcome to the 60's", "The Madison", "The Big Doll House", "You Can't Stop the Beat".

YOUTH ENSEMBLE - There will be a very limited number roles for pre-teens including "Good Morning Baltimore" and "You Can't Stop the Beat".
